The Royal Deeside area in Aberdeenshire has been, for many years, the place where the Royals go for a peaceful holiday in the Scottish Highlands. Since the purchase of Balmoral Castle by Prince Albert and Queen Victoria, the area has attracted many visitors looking for an outdoor adventure in the Cairngorms, a fishing holiday on the River Dee, and to discover a special item in one of the local shops appointed by the Royals.

Balmoral Castle & Gardens (SEASONAL)
Balmoral Castle is a summer residence for the British royal family. Parts of the gardens, grounds, and exhibitions are open to visitors at certain times of the year, when the Royal Family is not in residence. The estate was purchased in 1852 by Prince Albert for his wife, Queen Victoria. Finding the original house too small, Prince Albert commissioned the construction of a new castle in the distinctive Scottish Baronial style, completed in 1856.

Braemar Castle is a historic 17th-century castle. Built in 1628 by John Erskine, Earl of Mar, it originally served as a hunting lodge and a strategic stronghold in the Highlands. It is owned by the community.

Royal Deeside—often referred to as Royal Aberdeenshire—is a picturesque region in the northeast of Scotland, known for its strong historic connection with the British Royal Family. The area stretches along the valley of the River Dee from the city of Aberdeen westwards into the Highlands and the mountains of Cairngorms National Park.
The “royal” association began in the 19th century when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert purchased the estate of Balmoral Castle in 1852 as their private Highland residence. Since then, the area has been closely linked with the British monarchy and remains a favoured retreat for the Royal Family.
Royal Deeside is celebrated for its dramatic landscapes, including forests, rivers, and heather-covered hills. The region is also known for its historic villages, castles, and outdoor pursuits such as walking, fishing, and wildlife watching. Nearby landmarks include Braemar Castle and the village of Braemar, famous for hosting the annual Braemar Gathering, one of the most prestigious Highland Games in Scotland.
